Racing in Iowa
Hello Johnson family!
In about 6 weeks I will be headed out to Decorah, Iowa to do a race called TransIowa on April 28th and 29th. Now I know what you are thinking.
"Maybe it's like that RAGBRAI ride!"
Well it is similar in that they are both in Iowa and involve cycling. However TransIowa is about 322 miles long and takes place primarily on gravel and level B roads. Therefore I will be on a mountain bike instead of a road bike. The other thing that is different is that RAGBRAI takes 7 days or so to complete whereas TransIowa has a 34 hour time limit.
"Oh a 34 hours time limit, what a wussy!" you might say.
Yes I thought you might feel that way so I have upped the ante this year and will be racing it on a bike that has only one gear. Uphill, downhill and flat. Headwind, tailwind or calm. I will have only 2 options in terms of pedaling 322 miles, use the gear I brought or walk. The race is also self-supported which means after it starts, no one is allowed to help me. I am allowed to buy food, water, batteries and other supplies along the way so I will be stopping at the occasional gas station and/or resturant. However for this race I can't have a support crew follow or meet me anywhere unless I need to drop out of the race. The picture at the top of the post is from last year when the race was so hard and muddy that no one finished. The previous year the weather was nice and there were 9 finishers. This year approximately 100 riders will take the starting line for an unknown course. That's right, we know the distance and longest distance between any two towns but other than that we don't find out the race route until the day before the race starts!
Now I was going to drive out there for the race but I've had a bit of a change of heart. Getting there from Denver doesn't seem so bad but the thought of driving 14 hours home after staying awake riding for 322 miles makes me cringe. Instead I am thinking of flying into Rochester International Airport. From there I need to get to Decorah which is apparently about 45 miles south. I can rent a car but I wanted to see if anyone was interested in helping before and after the race and/or being my emergency bailout contact. Normally I would rope Marni into this task but school isn't out for the summer yet and I've already made her use most of her vacation days supporting me at other races. If you're interested in helping post a comment here or email me at chris@shiftedthinking.com. If you just want to wish me luck or tell me I'm crazy also feel free to post a comment or email me. Thanks for reading everyone!

Oh Chris...good luck but WHY??? I can hardly go on my treadmill for a half an hour! I bought a exersize ball and I hurt where I didn't know I had muscles. Why oh why would you purposly ride your bike for 30some hours?? You get my vote for determination that's for sure. Let us know how you do. Aunt Jill
Chris, you are a wuss with a capitol W (or is that Wisconsin is a wuss with a capitol W?). My one speed Schwinn with fat tires that I rode when growing up was good for going everywhere in town, and looked cool in the Tulip Time parade decked out in colored crepe paper, and sounded knarly with baseball cards on the spokes. I do remember dreading the 20 foot hill on Michigan Ave. coming back from town, sometimes barely going fast enough near the top to keep my balance. To get rid of your wuss factor I suggest chrome fenders and baseball cards. Love, Bob.
Way to go Chris. I do a spinning class for 1hr. 15 min at the gym, and am spent when I'm done. Kudos to you, you can do it!!!
Chris, my trusty atlas says that Decorah is 337 miles away from Council Bluffs. You are actually pretty close to Wisconsin. So if your race heads you in this direction, I'll be waiting with a ice cold Pepsi.
I'm guessing we'll actually ride into Wisconsin and perhaps another state during the ride but since they don't tell us the route it's all a big guess at this point.
OK Chris, if you ride that bike all through Iowa, just keep on going all the way to Michigan to see the family again. You will not be considered a wuss then!
Chris, if you end up coming into Wisconsin (and yes father, I did capitalize the "w" this time, just for you), and find out the day before, let me know, and I'll see if I can get out there just to cheer you on. Good luck
I agree with Bob, besides, you would be the coolest looking person in the race with baseball cards and crepe paper. Maybe you could also add some pom poms to the handle bars and those "pop" things that move up and down on the spokes to accompany the baseball card noise!!!! Just think, people could hear you coming for miles!
Seriously, Good Luck! If you ride to Wilmington, North Carolina, I'll drive you where ever you like (within a 30 miles radius...my car is not reliable!)

whoa!!!!! What is up with this Wisconsin bashing. I must say that Wisconsin is like Michigan. Sorry. I was thinking of something else. Hey Chris. Whether were there or not will be cheering you on. I would say go with the baseball cards, but do they have Colorado Rockie bball cards?
